Ethylene oxide is produced by oxidation of ethylene with oxygen at circa 250ºC over a catalyst comprising metallic silver supported on alumina. Typically, promoters such as chloride are also included.
Industrial Use
- Ethylene oxide is an intermediate in the production of ethylene glycol and other chemicals.
- In the manufacture of ethylene glycol and higher alcohol.
- In manufacture of glycol ether solvents, ethanolamines and nonionic detergents.
- In the synthesis of chlorine, thiamine and procaine.
Medical Use
- Ethylene oxide/halocarbons or ethylene oxide/carbon dioxide mixtures are effective and time tested medical equipment sterilant.
